A fully LG3a/LG7 compliant lighting scheme has been achieved at the DVLA in Swansea is thanks to Miela-SG luminaires from RIDI. Demonstrating the key benefits that a well-designed luminaire and lighting scheme can bring to the commercial office environment, the new lighting installation delivers a comfortable, productive and shadow-free environment for the organisation's staff.

Office space in Block C and D at the DVLA Swansea Vale campus has recently been refurbished and M&E Consultant WSP Group of Bristol was tasked with providing a suitable lighting scheme. WSP chose to create a 'test environment' in which the client could view luminaires from a variety of manufacturers

Adrian Thomas of WSP Group takes up the story: "We built a trial area for the client at the DVLA Swansea Vale campus and installed luminaires from various manufacturers. The client was then able to view and judge the performance of each luminaire. The client preference was for Ridi's Miela-SG which fitted in well with our design strategy to give a good quality, energy efficient installation that reacted to both occupancy and available day light."

The MIELA-SG range is designed for the lighting specifier who requires a fully compliant one-stop LG3a/LG7 lighting solution. Manufactured in Germany to a UK design, the MIELA-SG liberates the office environment from poor light distribution and oppressive shadow patterns. The direct/indirect design incorporates a parabolic micro-louvre set in the perforated primary reflector. This creates a balance of direct light combined with a wide spread uplight element. The design also includes an attractive, low glare reeded matt aluminium gull-wing reflector for excellent vertical light control. Lamp options are available for various T5 and TC-L fluorescent lamps. The range is available with a new range of integral 3-hour self-test emergency conversions available for the UK .

All UK versions are fitted with a variable internal baffle system that can adjust the vertical light control and tune the photometric performance depending on installation height. Easy to adjust on site, the baffle system significantly improves the overall photometric performance of the luminaire whilst ensuring cut-off compliance. A surface mounted version is also now available that broadens the application possibilities for any suitable commercial office and public sector environments.
