| When
architects and designers Sutton, Griffin and Morgan refurbished their
offices at The Long Barn in Welford near Newbury they wanted to make
a positive statement and stamp a strong identity for their firm of
architects and designers throughout the building.
Lighting was an
extremely important part of the refurbishment and RIDI was commissioned
to supply a wide variety of luminaires to blend perfectly with the
unusual office design.
RIDI, who specialise
in providing inspired alternatives to the Category 2 lighting usually
found in offices, supplied over 90 luminaires, mainly from their
AIDA family.
In the main part
of the building, where the ceilings are high, luminaires with indirect
beams are coupled together and suspended in parallel giving a glare
free linear over the entire length of the barn. A particular feature
of the AIDA luminaire is the perforated bands that allow a minimal
amount of direct light whilst reducing of the contrast against the
ceiling.
Wall uplighters
were used in the meeting rooms and directors offices - floor standing
versions were also supplied to provide flexibility. Recessed downlighters
create a different emphasis in admin rooms and corridors (where
the ceiling height is lower). With varying shaped rooms each with
different functions and requirements, RIDI has been able to offer
a versatile lighting system that can be adapted to individual needs
whilst maintaining a family appearance throughout the building.
Mark Hambury director
of Sutton Griffin and Morgan commented: As designers of the offices
we had an idea of how we wanted the lighting to be from the start.
From a functional point of view it had to be appropriate for both
the PC and drawing board design plus administration tasks as well
as illuminate the building in a creative way. The outcome is excellent
and the lighting has achieved everything we wanted it to."
