A low energy indirect lighting solution from RIDI Lighting has helped leading technical publisher John Wiley & Sons realise demanding low energy targets for its new UK headquarters in Chichester , West Sussex .
Built by Mowlem to incorporate the latest sustainable construction technologies, the building is 50,000ft² of work space laid out over three storeys. Mainly open-plan with some cellular offices at the perimeter, the centre of the building is covered by a large atrium, which has allowed the building services engineer, HBS Consulting Engineers of Reigate to make optimum use of natural ventilation and daylight.
The lighting design required detailed planning. The new changes within CIBSE LG3 addendum ruled out a conventional category 2 solution which would not have complemented the building design or create the desired ambience. After careful consideration a suspended, predominantly uplit solution featuring RIDI’s AIDA series was favoured.
Ken Beall of HBS comments: “. We needed to balance the natural with the artificial light sources - as well as create a low energy lighting solution. RIDI’s AIDA has helped deliver these elements. The scheme has high levels of visual comfort and the interior surfaces are well illuminated to provide a perfect VDT environment.”
RIDI supplied around 600 AIDA 2x35w T5 wire suspended uplighter luminaires to illuminate the main office workspace areas. The AIDA is an unobtrusive luminaire with an appealing, elegant profile. Its economical design and soft contours are supported by traditional German build quality. To provide flexibility, the luminaires have been linked together in clusters using joining couplers to create a pleasing harmony with the building’s architecture.
The column-mounted wall lights are from the AIDA-W range, which fill in the perimeter areas and are designed to match the profile of the main AIDA’s and provide further visual interest. Other areas were also supplied with matching products from the AIDA range to create a harmonised lighting scheme throughout.
